In the movies, why is the male star listed before the female star?

In the opening credits of motion pictures, it is traditional to list the male first, and then the female. For example, in “Gone With the Wind,” the opening credits list Clark Gable as Rhett Butler and Vivian Leigh as Scarlett O’Hara, in that order, and “Driving Miss Daisy,” the stars are Morgan Freeman and Jessica Tandy, in that order. Any ideas on why the male is listed first? Thanks to all who respond.

it’s called “top billing” and often determined by what’s in the actors contract.

actors often will fight over this position even more aggressively than negotiating their pay.

a few times I’ve heard of the more famous actor giving someone the better spot but that’s rare.

if you notice on some movie posters the names are often placed even above the title of the film.
