Chenille Yarn

Chenille Yarn
olefin vs acrylic vs. cotton chenille yarn for afghan?

I’m knitting an afghan with chenille yarn but I’ve read lots of conflicting information on which kind of yarn is best. Can someone help? Thanks.

There are different kinds (quality) of chenille. You may find you are going to have a lot of trouble with the poorer made ones. How do you know? Not always by price. You need to check the weight. Find out how many yards per pound there is in this yarn. The heavier one (fewer yards) is better made and will hold up better.

There is rayon and cotton and silk chenille. I’ve not heard of olefin or ackRlic… those probably are really cheap and poorly made. Go for quality since you are going to spend so much time making this.

Remember that chenille will come apart quite easily if you let it. Be sure it is knit or crocheted quite tightly. It can’t move! It likes to “worm” — it makes loops out of the fabric.. there is no explanation, just that it comes loose and slips out. If it’s firmly knit or crochet, it will hold together better.

If you are going to spend so much time on this, try to get well-made cotton. It will last longer. Rayon is good too, but silk (more expensive) is really the best.
