Audio Mixers: Daniel Bernier; Mark Berry. Audio Remixers: Mark Moore; Louis Silas, Jr.; Mark McGuire. Directors: Matt Aitken; Mike Stock. Despite the unconscionably lame title, ’80s Dance Party, Vol. 1 is a solid 12-track collection of acid house, electro, new wave, urban R & B and mainstream dance hits from the ’80s, including Bomb the Bass’s Beat Dis, Herbie Hancock’s Rockit, Inner City’s Big Fun and S’Express’ Theme from S’Express as well as Ready for the World’s Oh Sheila and Jody Watley’s Looking for a New Love. Some tracks, like Animotion’s Obsession, are included in dance mixes, but the overall effect is that of a fun party-oriented sampler. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Personnel: Santigold (vocals). Recording information: Atlantic Studios, Los Angeles, CA; Atlantic Studios, NYC; Downtown Music Studios, NYC; Echo Park Backhouse Studios, Los Angeles, CA; Eldorado Recording Studios, Los Angeles, CA; Federal Prism Studio, Los Angeles, CA; House of Hit, Los Angeles, CA; Jungle City Studios, NYC; Patrick’s House, Stockholm, Sweden; Paulie Sound Factory, Los Angeles, CA; Rodeo Recording, Santa Monica, CA; The Village Studios, Los Angeles, CA. In the eight years between Santigold’s self-titled debut and 99 Cents, artists who ignored the boundaries between genres – as well as the mainstream and the underground – became more fashionable and more commonplace, but Santi White remained in a class of her own. Her wide-ranging mix of new wave, reggae, R & B, synth pop, and more sounds fresher than ever on her third album, in large part because she lets the sense of fun that powered Santogold and the less overtly catchy Master of My Make-Believe come to the fore. From the album’s artfully cheap-looking cover to its music, there’s a self-aware playfulness on display; though White depicts herself as a commodity, 99 Cents’ pop never feels like a concession or compromise (though she thoroughly dismantles a poseur ex on the excellent final track, Who I Thought You Were). Instead, White radiates confidence at every turn, whether balancing self-obsession and self-worth on the cheery album opener Can’t Get Enough of Myself or valuing herself as a mogul as well as an artist on Big Boss Big Time Business, which features brash production work from Rostam Batmanglij and Hit Boy. Indeed, White enlists an all-star cast of indie and pop artists and producers to bring 99 Cents’ vision to fruition. The fiery, aptly named Banshee features songwriting by veteran hitmaker Cathy Dennis, production by White’s longtime collaborator John Hill, and backing vocals by Charli XCX, while Swedish pop mastermind Patrik Berger helps Rendezvous Girl sound like a-ha’s

A Course in Mathematics for Students of Physics

A Course in Mathematics for Students of Physics

$122.54

This text breaks new ground in presenting and applying sophisticated mathematics in an elementary setting. Aimed at physics students, it covers the theory and physical applications of linear algebra and of the calculus of several variables, particularly the exterior calculus. The exterior differential calculus is now being recognized by mathematicians and physicists as the best method of formulating the geometrical laws of physics, and the frontiers of physics have already begun to reopen fundamental questions about the geometry of space and time. Covering the basics of differential and integral calculus, the authors then apply the theory to interesting problems in optics, electronics (networks), electrostatics, wave dynamics, and finally to classical thermodynamics. The authors adopt the spiral method of teaching (rather than rectilinear), covering the same topic several times at increasing levels of sophistication and range of application. *Author: Bamberg, Paul/ Sternberg, Shlomo *Series Title: Course in Mathematics for Students of Physics *Series Number: 1 *Binding Type: Paperback *Number of Pages: 424 *Publication Date: 1991/08/30 *Language: English *Dimensions: 9.70 x 6.89 x 0.78 inches

A Practical Guide to Pseudospectral Methods

A Practical Guide to Pseudospectral Methods

$73.47

During the past two decades, pseudospectral methods have emerged as successful, and often superior, alternatives to better known computational procedures, such as finite difference and finite element methods of numerical solution, in several key application areas. These areas include computational fluid dynamics, wave motion, and weather forecasting. This book explains how, when and why this pseudospectral approach works. In order to make the subject accessible to students as well as researchers and engineers, the author presents the subject using illustrations, examples, heuristic explanations, and algorithms rather than rigorous theoretical arguments. This book will be of interest to graduate students, scientists, and engineers interested in applying pseudospectral methods to real problems. *Author: Fornberg, Bengt/ Ciarlet, Philippe G./ Iserles, A. *Series Title: Cambridge Monographs on Applied and Computational Mathematics (Paperback) *Series Number: 1 *Binding Type: Paperback *Number of Pages: 244 *Publication Date: 1998/10/28 *Language: English *Dimensions: 8.97 x 6.23 x 0.50 inches

A Tidal Wave of Encouragementnt

A Tidal Wave of Encouragementnt

$108.36

In July of 1884, pianist Calixa Lavallee performed a recital of works by American composers that began a highly influential series of such concerts. Over the course of the next decade, hundreds of all-American concerts were performed in the United States and Europe, a movement that fostered both the development and the perception of American music as a unique art form. A Tidal Wave of Encouragement-the title of which is derived from one observer’s description of the movement-is the first in-depth study of this significant period in American music. Providing a comprehensive history of the Concerts as well as detailed accounts of the intense critical debate surrounding them, author E. Douglas Bomberger reveals how one decade shaped the future of American classical music and very much impacted the way we hear it today.

A Turn In The Dream-Songs [digipak]

A Turn In The Dream-Songs [digipak]

Personnel: Jeffrey Lewis (vocals, guitar, piano); Franic Rozycki (mandolin); Joe Zeitlin (cello); David Beauchamp (drums, percussion). Audio Mixer: Julie McLarnon. Recording information: Analogue Catalogue (01/31/2011-02/24/2011); Vintage Recording Studio, Manchester, UK (01/31/2011-02/24/2011). Following the splendid career highlight Em Are I, and after a couple of collaborative detours – the uneven-at-best The Bundles with Kimya Dawson, and the delightfully loopy Come On Board with weirdo folk icon Peter Stampfel – lovably quirky New York songwriter/cartoonist Jeffrey Lewis returns with a highly likable sixth album full of his characteristic wit, whimsy, sardonic self-deprecation, and transcendental musings. Lewis’ regular backing band the Junkyard are absent here (under that billing, at least), as are the occasional bursts of electrified rowdiness they’ve provided in the past. In their place are a clutch of mostly British indie folk players (including the Wave Pictures’ Franic Rozycki, who provides some fine mandolin work throughout), and a bevy of guests – members of the Vaselines, Dr. Dog, Au Revoir Simone, Misty’s Big Adventure, and Schwervon! -who help flesh out the album’s pleasantly loose, vaguely psych-folky vibe, particularly on the tone-setting To Go and Return, whose spacy, surreal lyric (a somewhat Seussian nonsense rhyme about the cosmic metaphysics of wish-making) is the source of the album’s peculiar title. Despite all the friends he’s amassed here, Lewis remains an archetypal loner, a condition which informs many of the album’s sharpest numbers, from the lovelorn lambast How Can It Be? (featuring peppy, ’60s-style backing vocals by the Dr. Dog boys) and the goofy Cult Boyfriend (which likens Lewis’ romantic boom-and-bust cycles to a rapid-fire list of pop culture obscurities), to I Got Lost’s gentle, plain-spoken disquisition on disconnection, and When You’re by Yourself’s wryly tender dissection of the practical logistics of lonelin

Absolute Loser *

Audio Mixer: Thom Monahan. Recording information: Golden Void, Los Angeles, CA; Valiant Effort, Portland, OR. Photographer: Jerry Davis. Taking a break from Fruit Bats after 2011′s Tripper, bandleader Eric D. Johnson composed scores for a handful of films and released a solo album as EDJ before re-embracing his more well-known moniker. On Fruit Bats’ sixth LP, Absolute Loser, he continues to operate as a band of one, at least in terms of official membership, though the record carries a jangle-rich, full-band presence. Johnson also re-embraces his group’s folky roots, as demonstrated by the banjo that ornaments Humbug Mountain Song, an uptempo, minor-key remembrance. That quality is also reflected in titles like From a Soon-to-Be Ghost Town, an easygoing alt-country elegy (You know it’s hard to be the last one in a soon-to-be ghost town/When all that you’ve loved is now gone). The likewise geographical My Sweet Midwest is a warm and lively anthem that would make a fine jingle for a visitor’s bureau somewhere with amber waves of grain, if taken literally instead of metaphorically. Elsewhere, twang seasons pretty chords on the lush, synth-enforced None of Us. The trippier Good Will Come to You gets hazy in the chorus with its wash of electronic and acoustic textures, and Don’t You Know That studies the relentlessness of the new day in the face of loss with sparse piano, acoustic guitar, and elegant solo electric guitar. On the whole, Absolute Loser is dominated by an energetic wistfulness and sweet melodicism that characterize most of Johnson’s work, whatever his instrument palette. While that should please fans, the solidly crafted song set also offers as good an entry point as any for potential admirers. ~ Marcy Donelson

Personnel: Isabel Fernndez (vocals). Audio Mixer: Santi Garcia. Recording information: Estudios Pastora, Vigo (10/2015); Ultramarinos Costa Brava, Sant Feliu de Guxols (10/2015). Aries’ third album, Adieu or Die, is a glittering, shimmering bedroom disco ball of indie pop meets electronics, similar to Panda Bear, but only if he was way calmer and far more straightforward. Isabel Fernndez Reviriego is the driving force behind the project, and her previous albums as Aries have hinted at the richness and graceful beauty heard here, but only now does it all come together perfectly. With acoustic guitar and her lovely voice as the constants, Reviriego adds bright loops and bleeping electronics to the warm melodies, building the songs into shiny, self-contained objects of quiet beauty. The songs fit together like squares on a quilt warm enough to keep you comfortable in the winter and colorful enough to have a picnic feast on during the summer months. A few of the songs stand out, thanks to their sharper-than-the-rest hooks. The thumping El Paseo sounds like a fairy-winged El Guincho track, Eclipse Total features Reviriego’s most open-hearted vocals (which is saying a lot), and Memorias has an infectious beat and the most singalong-friendly vocals here. Mostly though, the album flows together from song to song like a well-chosen and well-cooked meal, with the sounds and melodies complementing and subtly playing off each other until the end is reached and the listener is fully satisfied – especially after digesting the 11-plus-minute title track that ends the album on a puffy wave of sleep-inducing synths and sequencers. It’s a fine way to end the album, sending you off to dreamland with a tender embrace. Adieu or Die marks the full fruition of Reviriego’s talents and is sure to make any and all fans of tender indie electronic pop happy. ~ Tim Sendra

Alfred 00-24637S S More Cowbell-Aoa Book

Alfred 00-24637S S More Cowbell-Aoa Book

$9.53

More Cowbell was inspired by the famous television skit featuring a rock band, a record producer, and an over-zealous cowbell player. If the cowbell player is good at hamming it up (and rocking out!), you could try the following staging suggestions: Cowbell player plays with intensity and lots of movement, and starts moving in measure 17 toward the front of the band, ending up next to the conductor in measure 24, bowing to the audience on beat 4. Conductor gives a stern look and gestures to student to get back in the percussion section (possibilities: slit throat gesture with side of first finger followed by pointing forcefully to the back, or similar gestures). Student slinks back, starts playing cowbell again, but quietly this time. Playing gradually picks up intensity, and player starts again toward the front in measure 41, reaching the front by measure 48. In measure 48, either A) Conductor waves hands violently for student to stop, or B) have a couple of students place a large blanket over the cowbell player. This works, but only for one measure (player quits and doesn’t move in bar 49). Cowbell player resumes playing with a vengeance in measure 50 (either in spite of the teacher or under the blanket!). Make sure your new rock star takes another bow at the end of the piece. Have fun, and may your life always have More Cowbell! Correlated with Accent on Achievement, Book 1, page 27.
